If you have a specific trade show in mind that you plan on attending, we highly advise that you do the research first. As with any industry, marketing hype can easily get out of control in hopes of boosting attendance. A great way to find out if this particular trade show is worth the time and expense is to contact other companies that have attended that trade show before and ask about their experience. This is particularly important if your company is new or you don't have a huge budget to invest in a trade show appearance - you want to maximize your chances of exposure.

Attending just any trade show that caters to your particular industry might not always be wise. Find out which trade shows are most likely to be attended by the people who represent the companies you want to do business with.

When you get ready to make an appearance at a trade show, make sure you get the word out to your current customers as well as possible customers in your segment of the market. Let them know you will be attending that specific trade show - ideally you will be able to utilize this trade show appearance to your advantage and announce the launch of your new product line or a service you're providing.

Get your sales team prepped well ahead of time and make sure they know exactly how you want them to represent your company at the trade show. A trade show appearance is your chance to generate new business from leads or even make a sale while you're there. With that in mind, your sales team needs to be able to immediately connect with anyone who comes to your booth - as well as qualify them to determine if they are a good fit for what you are offering before making a sales pitch.

Any leads to potential customers you pick up at the trade show should be followed up as soon as the trade show is over and you're back in the office. It is absolutely imperative that you act as quickly as possible while your company is still at the forefront of any customer's mind.

Don't get lost in the sea of other companies at a busy trade show use an eye-catching attraction such as a billboard or product demo to bring customers to your booth. If you have any signage up at your booth, make sure it's easy to scan and gives any customers an immediate reason for stopping at your booth to learn more.

If you plan on offering giveaway items - offer an item that is of immediate value such as a marketing guide or book that a potential customer could get some use out of.
