Executive Team Building - Why Is It So Important?

By Kidder Seven

Like it or not, you need to launch an executive team building activity if you want your company to reach its growth potential. There is no "I" in the word team, to put it simply, and even if you have high-powered achievers from all parts of the state or country, you cannot truly expect to achieve synergy if these individuals are just that - working as individuals with their own specific motives and objectives in mind. You may be comparing synergy to the ubiquitous well-oiled machine, and that might be a valid analogy, except for one thing - you are dealing with human beings, not mechanical entities. Personality clashes, egos, differences in opinion, simple misunderstandings, and so on make it necessary and worthwhile to spend some time developing the teamwork aspects of working together, and helping everyone understand their important role within the team structure.

The basic precepts of working together may sound like a collection of common sense rules that even a child than master, but the chances of a group of seemingly mature adults manifesting behaviors that diverge from the goal of teamwork are all too realistic. A team can be broken down into different individuals working independently from one another, with little to no coordination or congruence to the team's common goal. Productivity is hampered by the lack of communication. Indeed, this may look like a fine mess a simple misunderstanding had created, and usually the solution is to enlist the services of an outsider, somebody who looks at things in an unbiased manner, calling things as he or she would see it with no leaning towards anybody in particular.

Working together and synergy are closely affiliated to each other, and it often seems not to sound like rocket science at all - however, as anybody can attest, working as a team on a constant and consistent basis can be easier said than done due to the nature of human beings in general. Somebody may feel that another teammate is out to get him or her, which could result in an uncoordinated, unfocused effort detrimental to the team. Communication breaks down, and with it, the company's productivity. What often happens next would be the influence and assistance of somebody with an outside perspective, somebody who can look at things objectively and clean up the mess that had been created. This is precisely why there are so many consulting firms today specializing in executive team building, organizational assessments, corporate culture, and the many related issues.

Conflict management, critical thinking, problem solving, and other items can be covered to address or improve any problem areas your group is encountering, as well as generally revitalize and motivate your team.

Your men and women are the lifeblood of your business, and their talents can be maximized through executive team building. Simply convince your people to work towards that common goal which is, of course, building your team, and you can avail yourself of a grab bag of rewards for the business and its goal of synergy, such as reduced turnover, lower stress levels, improved job satisfaction and productivity numbers - those are just a select few! Since "team building" might sound like anathema for some of your men and women, make sure to inject some fun into what they might see as drudgery. Team building is the key to your future and a way to put the past behind you once and for all. This is simply the best way to achieve that elusive goal of synergy, so be sure you do your homework and find a consultant with experience and a range of bespoke activities that would work best for your team.
