Returning Students Often Opt To Study An Interdisciplinary Degree

By Karen Adams

Adults are heading back to school in larger numbers than in the past. Many are hoping for a better job or an increased rate of pay by completing a Bachelor's Degree. Others had their schooling disrupted by external commitments, such as family or service in the armed forces, and now they are simply finishing what they started. In addition, some people, who in the past gained two-year or Associate's Degrees are going back to school to prolong their studies and earn a four-year degree.

A large number of educational institutions offer programs to encourage and help adults earn their degrees. The interdisciplinary degree program is a common choice. An interdisciplinary degree is ideal for students who have been out of school for a minimum of 3 years. The program offers classes online, in the evening, as well as on the weekend to support the schedules of working adults.

Quite a few universities have instituted alternative ways to earn credits towards a degree. Some adults will make use of these methods to boost their subject credits in undergraduate degree programs. This shortens the time it takes to earn a more customary degree.

There's the College Level Examination Program (known as CLEP) which allows students to pass an exam in order to show their knowledge. The Challenge Exams are like CLEP, but are specific to certain courses. The PLA or Prior Learning Assessment is where students compile a written portfolio of their experiences that demonstrate college level learning. Credits that are employment-related are accepted for various training programs sponsored by employers. College credit can also be given for basic military training. College students ought to work with advisors to see how these types of programs will impact their standing.

The undergraduate degree programs have started policies that make their classes more suitable for adults. A psychology degree program has traditionally been one for students who want to continue on with graduate school. Today, some colleges are providing Applied Psychology certificate programs for those who happen to be working and just hoping to better their credentials.

Universities are hoping to attract more students to their schools through new developments like the interdisciplinary program. Because this program has been so successful, it has encouraged conventional curriculum scheduling to include night, online, and weekend classes. Even a few psychology degree programs have embraced this policy as a way to have more students.
