10 Steps To Bring Your Career To The Next Level

By Jocelyn Kinder

Every career success story is unique. There is no magic answer for success, but here are 10 steps that will help you get ahead.

Make a reassessment of your career. Is your career path supporting your interests and priorities? Do you think you can succeed? If not, then you might want to consider making a different move.

Define your career goals carefully and clearly. Only when you know exactly where it is you want to go, will you be able to map out your plan to get there.

Make a development plan. Determine the steps you need to take for your next promotion. You shouldn't forget about resources and due dates. Schedule these activities in your planner and follow through.

Let the management know about your career goals. If you work in an organization that promotes employee development, communicate your goals with your manager and ask for his or her support. If you are worried about resistance, then find a trustworthy mentor within the organization.

Volunteer to be the leader of a new project. This way, you learn new skills, show initiative, and are in a very visible position. It also gives you the chance to show your leadership skills.

Keep yourself updated. Read industry publications and reports. You should be aware of changing trends and know how to position yourself whenever that happens.

Get certified. You should use your industry knowledge for your advantage. Learn something that will give you and your company an edge.

Act as the leader. Offer to mentor a junior associate in your organization, apply for a position on a local board, or chair a committee for a non-profit organization.

Network, Network, Network. Realize that your organization and the community should be networked. To succeed, you need to increase your visibility and gain contacts. No one ever got to the top alone.

Be the best in your current position. Excellent performance will speak for itself. Remember that your performance is the most important thing to do good on.
