The Art Of Landscape Design

By Sarah Pinkal

Use of the art of landscape design can create a pleasing environment even in quite small spaces such as urban gardens. A skillfully designed garden can become a haven from the bustle of city life and a place to enjoy free time.

By choosing and planting appropriate bushes and trees the skilled planner may create privacy and lead the eye of the viewer away from the world outside and into areas of peace and beauty. This may be enhanced by laying turf on the ground and using flowers that may sooth the senses with their perfume.

The creative designer may also install stone fixtures such as walls, ornamental statues or fountains that can give the area the atmosphere of a classical garden. A person who wants a more modern feel may ask the designer to draw up a plan for a modern style sculpture or a spectacular display of lighting, concrete, metal and water that may delight the senses of friends and guests.

A skillful professional can create these effects on a larger scale in the gardens of large houses and institutions. This gives the designer scope to plant trees in a way that leads the eye to significant spots containing interesting monuments or water features.

In addition to their work on private gardens professional designers may also plan features of public parks, laying out lawns and shrubberies to please the eye and allow people to enjoy strolling around in the evenings and weekends. They may plan paths, water features or sheltered areas where people may sit in the summer months.

Landscape design is also important for providing a finishing touch to new building developments such as housing estates or civic buildings. When the building work has finished it leaves empty areas of mud that can be transformed into ordered lawns planted with well chosen trees and bushes. The designer is therefore an important part of every large construction project.
