Essentials Of Choosing Caskets For Funeral Services

By Karl Stevens

While inevitable, death is something that often comes as a surprise to most people. When a person dies, the family or loved ones of the deceased normally go through different stages of mourning. However, the family particularly the elders still need to arrange certain things, such as the funeral service and burial of the deceased, during this period of mourning.

There are several ways of arranging funeral services depending on the religion of the deceased. If the body is not cremated, it needs to be put in a casket and buried. In addition, caskets are used during the wake so family members, friends and other guests can view the person's body for the last time.

Types Of Caskets To Choose From

There are some considerations you need to take when choosing a casket for your deceased loved one. Today caskets come in different types, materials, colours and sizes. Examples of traditional caskets include those made from wood and metal. A new type of casket though, the eco-friendly type, has gained popularity in recent years. It is made from natural materials and does not contain any chemicals that threaten the earth's soil.

Although there is a great variety of caskets offered by many manufacturers today, there are some restrictions on the use of caskets in certain religions. For Orthodox Jewish religion, only wooden caskets which are not adorned can be used. On the other hand, many Christians prefer a solid casket with a removable lid for family and friends to view the dead during the wake. Other religions including Islam and Buddhism do not use caskets for their dead.

A casket will contain the body of the dead for years, which is why it has to be durable. For wooden caskets, hardwood such as mahogany, oak and pine is an excellent material to use. To produce quality caskets, the woodworkers must follow proper steps to ensure that the quality of the casket is at par with the finest furniture.

Bronze, copper and stainless steel are ideal materials for metal caskets. The wet sanding procedure is used to apply high gloss paint to a metal casket. Consider also the parts when buying a casket. The separate panels attached to the caskets should be properly welded to ensure the strength of the casket's framework.
