DIY Simple Guide to Placing a Diamond in a Semi-Mount

By Junior Ranger

With a semi-mount setting, side stones are in place but the focal gem is absent. This is done so you can choose your own diamond or gemstone to form a gorgeous and custom piece of jewelry. It's essentially rather easy to set your own semi-mount ring or earrings at home.

You'll need a gemstone from one of the corporations that sell your diamond jewelry , as well as gemstone setting pliers and a semi-mount prong setting. It also helps to have two tweezers, soft cotton cloth, a prong pusher and a jeweler's file.

Start by choosing the correct diamond size for your setting. If you are having trouble, try speaking to the seller who sold you the semi mount. You will also require the right cut of stone to perfectly complement your setting. Now, clean your diamond with the soft fabric and use a good pair of tweezers to put it into the setting. It should be rest uniformly on the setting before you tighten the setting.

Next, use the gem setting pliers to adjust the spikes. Rest one jaw of the pliers on the prong you want to tighten and the other jaw on the opposite prong. Rigorously apply pressure and, making sure the pliers don't slide out of place, close the prong round the diamond. Repeat for each prong and move round the diamond.

Ultimately, ensure you test the gemstone to be sure it's seated securely within the prongs. You can use the prong pusher to tighten the forks by adding pressure from the base of each prong towards the diamond. A jeweler's file can also help to get rid of any scratches from the pliers that stay on the forks. It is usually a smart idea to practice on a cheap stone and setting before you attempt to set your diamond; otherwise, you'll end up damaging the valuable gemstone.
