What's the Best Business for Me to Start?

By Jerrie Fields

If you are thinking about working for yourself, the best business for you will be designed around something you love. It will help if you are experienced in your field of interest, and this usually occurs over time.

You will probably find that you have experience doing the activities that you enjoy, as they are stuff you like to do. A successful business needs to benefit others and make you happy. The more value your business provides, the more the market will seek it and pay for your merchandise. There is a direct correlation.

Write 2 Lists

Put together two lists: (1) what you do best and (2) how these things will benefit other people. combining an idea from each list will give you your great idea. Now begin brainstorming. Use "reverse thinking", where you take a traditional action, result or reaction in a particular scenario and then switch it to the opposite.

After completing your brainstorm session, think about the existing consumer base for your idea. Does a business already offer comparable services? How many competitors are there? Does your idea truly offer value? Do your reality check sooner than later.

Standing Out from Everyone Else

Upon launching your start-up, you should create a USP (Unique Selling Proposition) which differentiates your company from the rest of the marketplace. Research your target market prior to opening your shop to ensure you put your company in a good starting place.

The goal is to stand out: you will have a greater chance of succeeding (presuming people like what you sell). Individuality is very important. Make your business unique through your location, style, method implementation, etc..

How to Copy Success

Don't re-invent the wheel. Although you want to stand out, you also want to "copy" what has already worked! Review techniques that have made other businesses successful. It may work well for you as well. Do not forget to take note of the failures - so you don't repeat the identical mistakes. Review recent issues of magazines like Entrepreneur or Inc to read articles about other business launches.

Some other important traits to consider as you start your business include ease of entry, growth potential and if the industry is seasonal. Will these factors have a big impact on your goals?

A Simple Way to Save Time and Money

After you have established a potential business idea that's profitable, begin your business plan. This helps uncover start-up costs, the time and investment needed to operate your company, how to find customers- plus you can see a projected financial time line for your company.

You want to prepare yourself with as much information as possible before you get started. The shortcut to success is learning from already-successful entrepreneurs. However, this is not so simple - finding those people, knowing which questions to ask and actually getting them to give you the time of day can be challenging.

The Next Step

Business books and guides are much easier and just as effective at getting you the information you need. If you haven't already, you may want to work for someone else in your industry so you accumulate experience and knowledge prior to launching your business.
